Vaginoplasty: “What Will Others Think?”

Date posted: June 24, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

Let’s face it, this is the question that a lot of ladies have when contemplating a vaginoplasty: “What will others think?” There is so much negativity being spewed forth about this operation that a lot of people are made to feel dirty-or even guilty-for having the procedure done. You know what I tell them? WHO CARES?! (more…)

Sexual Reassignment Surgery Core Procedures

Date posted: June 22, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

I talked some earlier about the things that come just before someone gets an SRS (sexual reassignment surgery). Now let’s talk about the two core procedures involved: vaginoplasty and labiaplasty. While SRS is certainly not the only reason for getting either of these operations, it is by no means an insignificant one. For the SRS patient, the vaginoplasty and labiaplasty are performed at two separate times-first the vaginoplasty and then the labiaplasty some time later. (more…)

Introduction to Sexual Reassignment Surgery

Date posted: June 20, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

In my writings about labiaplasty and vaginoplasty, I tend to focus on the physical and emotional benefits that the procedures bring. However, there is one purpose for the procedures that pops up fairly regularly that, regardless of how sensitive or controversial, should be discussed: sexual reassignment surgery. Pampering the Vaginoplasty Patient

Date posted: June 12, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

It’s infuriating, but a lot of people heap needless guilt on a woman seeking a vaginoplasty, as though she’s attacking another person rather than taking control of her own body. As a result, when many women see a surgeon about a vaginoplasty, this guilt brings a lot of stress. That’s why I’m a complete believer in doing everything necessary for the patient before the procedure to make her feel relaxed and confident about herself. It’s essential that we provide these patients with a friendly, warm environment where they can feel okay about sharing their concerns with us. (more…)

Take Advantage of the Internet

Date posted: June 8, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

One of the best things about the coming-of-age of vaginoplasty and labiaplasty is that it takes place pretty much concurrent with the explosive growth of the Internet. This is nice because it makes it so much easier to find out information about the procedures. But only for those who will take advantage of it. Let me encourage you to make full use of online services if you’re considering vaginoplasty, labiaplasty or any other plastic surgery. (more…)

Smart Woman’s Guide to Plastic Surgery

Date posted: June 5, 2009 by Helen Colen MD

I’ve been asked in the past about good books to read to study up on the whole area of plastic surgery. I don’t do a lot of reviews here, but I would like to mention one book that has been acclaimed by both lay-readers and those in the medical field. It is The Smart Woman’s Guide to Plastic Surgery.
