Checking photos of the surgeon you're thinking of hiring is a good idea. I'd go a little further, though, and get before and after pictures of several surgeons. That way you have something with which to compare his or her pictures---so you can tell whether his results are up to par.

Thanks for the advice, Dr. Colen, but can I add a little something? Personally, I don't think before and after photos should be considered the ultimate in researching a plastic surgeon. Remember that the surgeon is completely in charge of those photos. He decides which ones show him in a good light and which ones do not--and is sure to show you only the best ones.

This is not to say that there is no value in the photos. You absolutely need to see examples of the results that you can expect to get. But it should be the starting point of your research--not the ending point. Other things, like credentials, experience, and references should be more important.

Here's an idea for a way to pay for your plastic surgery. I know this is an innovative approach, but I've found it works for anyone who seriously tries it. The idea: Work a job and save your money. Call me old fashioned, but I don't want to put myself in debt over a new nose or reconstructed labia. And I got nothing against anyone who gets any of those procedures done. My day's coming, I'm sure. But I also got nothing against someone buying a new pair of shoes or a new wardrobe, but I don't think you should take out a loan for it.

This article reminded me of a girl i worked with years ago. During the time we worked together, she was in the hospital three separate times for three separate procedures (one of them liposuction, the other medical in nature). Each time, her husband suddenly found reasons to be away from the house while she was at home recovering. Either he suddenly had to work late all the time or had a friend in town or something. I trust that he is the exception rather than the rule, but it makes me mad that there are even a few insensitive men in the world like that.

I'm the luckiest person in the world, because I have a "significant other" who I know, no matter what I go through, he'll be there to support me through it. And when my time comes for a labiaplasty -- and I'm almost certain it will come -- he'll be a big part of the process.

I would like to add one extra point to the article, though. The boyfriend's / husband's / partner's part does not start after the procedure and with the recovery process. I think it starts as the woman is considering the procedure in the first place. After all, other than the woman herself, the person who will be most impacted by this will be the person with whom she is having sexual relations.

Crazy as it sounds, I was not totally opposed to the tax on plastic surgery that was originally in the healthcare bill (but then taken out). We all know that the changes in healthcare in America are going to cost some money. That money has to come somewhere. Everyone seems to be fine with "Americans" paying for it, as long as I'm not one of those Americans. And the logic is consistent with what we've done in the past. We tax cigarettes and alcohol because you don't need those. You want them, but could live without them. That certainly holds true for plastic surgery.

I understand tha there are some plastic surgery procedures that are more necessary than others, but still....Maybe they should have shaped the tax so that only elective cosmetic procedures were taxed, but those which were considered medical necessity, or constructive surgery, were tax exempt.

I see little in the healthcare bill that finally passed that will help either the plastic surgery field or those of us interested in getting a cosmetic surgery procedure. I don't label myself as either a Republican or Democrat, but I have to call it like I see it. Everything I've read says that there is no limit to how high the insurance companies can raise insurance premiums. So even if insurance providers were forced to start covering more plastic surgery procedures, no problem! They'll just jack your insurance rate up sky high to pay for it. Either way you look at it, we're still going to wind up paying for our own plastic surgery procedures, unless they're absolutely required to keep us healthy. And even then, I don't see much changing.

And by the way, sure, we can celebrate there not being a "Botox Tax" in the healthcare bill, but what's up with the tax on tanning salons? For many of us, who not only are considering plastic surgery, but also like to tan once in a while, they're cutting off one end of the hotdog, adding to the other end, and saying it's bigger. Politics as usual!

This is all we need, people doing plastic surgery on themselves at home. Hey, why stop there? Why not heart surgery too? Or remove your own appendix?
