What is the G Spot?

The G spot is an area of the anterior (front) of the vagina, about 2 inches in. The tissue may be a little thicker here, and is more sensitive to the touch. If you curl 2 fingers just inside your vagina and press your vaginal tissue toward your skin, and with the other hand, press down on the skin just above your pubic bone, you will likely find an area of increased sensitivity (even if it doesn’t cause arousal). This is the area of the G Spot.

What is G spot enhancement?

G spot enhancement creates more fullness to the G spot so you can have a more intense and deeper orgasm. It also allows achieving an orgasm with less difficulty. G spot enhancement is also referred to as the G shot, G spot amplification, or G spot augmentation. Women find that after G spot enhancement, they are much more aware of their G spot. For women who are already in tuned to their G spot, they notice that it is more sensitive, fulfilling, and orgasms occur easier, more frequently, with less frustration, and are more intense.

Some women are not aware of their G spot, or think they do not have one. These women find that with G spot enhancement, they are able to achieve deep vaginal orgasms, and become aware of the elusive G spot! G spot enhancement is a safe, quick, and an effective way to have more sexual satisfaction.

What is used?

A “filler” is used. Fillers are often used to plump up other areas of the body, like the lips, or the face. The ideal filler would be safe, free of allergic potential, soft, easy to inject and last a long time. The closest thing to the ideal filler is a group of products called hyaluronan. These are also known as Hyaluronic acids. There are also hyaluronans used for joint injection. We know about the safety of these products as they have been used in over 150,000,000 injections worldwide.

Does it hurt?

The G-spot filler procedure is essentially painless. There is no downtime, and sex can be resumed the same day. There are no limitations.

How long does it take?

You need to have a consultation with one of our doctors, to go over the procedure, consent, and to make sure you have all of your questions answered. After that, the procedure takes less than a minute.

What can I expect?

Most women will experience heightened arousal and sensitivity during sexual stimulation immediately. Your ability to have a deep vaginal orgasm is likely to be easier to achieve and be more intense. This should last for several months. Your sexual partner will notice your increased pleasure and more fulfilling orgasms, but physically, you will be the same.

How long does it last?

It varies. Depending on the filler used it can be a couple weeks to 18 months..

How to find your G spot

To get a sense of where your G spot may be, place one hand over your bladder just above the bone. With the other hand, use 2 fingers and insert them touching the top of your vagina. The area that is the most sensitive where you press between the two hands is the typical area of the G spot.

If you use your fingers, you’ll feel the difference in texture in the area where the G Spot is located, which is bumpier than the rest of the smooth vaginal lining. If you reach something that feels like the tip of your nose, you are touching your cervix and you’ve gone too far. Many women have difficulty finding their G Spot, because its size, dimension, and location vary from woman to woman.

If you know where your G spot is, then you communicate that to the doctor. If you have never found it, the doctor will determine the location during exam. It is basically an area of increased sensitivity.

Does it work for everybody?

It will be effective for most women. Like all medical and surgical procedures, there is no guarantee that what works for one person will work for everyone. Women who are able to achieve vaginal orgasms (referred to as “deep orgasms”) have slightly different or fuller tissue in the area known as the G spot than in women with only clitoral orgasms.

This thicker layer of tissue between the anterior (front) wall of the vagina and the urethra (urine tube) may account for the increased sensitivity and ability of these women to have a deeper or vaginal orgasm. When stimulated, this tissue thickens further, and the nerve endings appear to give a heightened sense of arousal, leading to a vaginal or “deep” orgasm. The G spot has not been found to have more nerve endings, but perhaps increased sensitivity for pleasure in these nerve tissues.

The concept of the G spot enhancement also referred to as the G shot, is to thicken the area up with commonly used fillers so that increased arousal can occur. For women who already achieve vaginal orgasms, the thickening of this tissue may lead to more readily achieved, as well as more intense orgasms.

For women who are unable to have a vaginal orgasm (so they may feel they do not have a G Spot) this procedure thickens up the tissue in that area, and increases the chances of a deep, vaginal orgasm.

What kind of preparation is needed?

No preparation is needed. It is just like getting your annual Pap smear and gynecological exam.

Are there any restrictions afterward?

No, you can resume all activities immediately. You can have sex the same day.

Summer is just around the corner and so is bikini weather! Do you feel uncomfortable with an excess bulge at the top of your vagina that just doesn’t look right in anything you wear? This area is the Mons Pubis or “pubic mound”, and can become enlarged during pregnancy or extreme weight gain. Unfortunately there are simply no exercises that directly affect this problem area.

No matter how much weight you lose or toning up you do you may still be left to feel uncomfortable in your own skin. Many women suffer from this feeling particularly while wearing bathing suits or even jeans.

While Liposuction and Tummy Tucks can be used to tighten up the mons pubis, there is a simple surgery called a Mons Pubic Reduction which can help remove the unwanted bulge in your pelvic region.

Mons Pubic Reduction

Mons Pubic Reduction is performed in women who have excess fat deposits at the bottom of the abdomen where her belly connects to the pubic area. The mons is the area specifically over the pubic bone and above the clitoris and its hood.

When there is an access of fat stored in the pubis, it may be suctioned out using liposuction technique to create the desired effect. Often both a skin reduction and suction may be used. The Mons Pubic procedure is achieved through a small incision.

Consultation at the Cosmetic Gynecology Suite

If you would like to get rid of the excess fat that’s preventing you from wearing tight jeans and bikini bottoms comfortably, we encourage you to contact our staff today to set up a consultation. Together we will help you to determine if a Mons Pubic Reduction is the solution you need.

At the Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite, you will receive the attentive and superb personal care you deserve when you decide to have plastic surgery of the vaginal area such as Mons Pubic Reduction.

Does your Vagina Anatomy Embarrass You?

Most women for most of history have shied away from any discussions relating to genitalia and their appearances, especially when it comes to their own genitalia. In the past, if any woman had an issue with her external genital region- whether physical, cosmetic, or both- she would have most likely simply gone on with her life without mentioning it to anyone, not even her doctor.

Thankfully, these days, women who are experiencing any issues with their external vaginal region have more open channels of communication with which to express their concerns. Not only has external vaginal rejuvenation surgery- or as it is technically known, “labiaplasty”- been gaining more and more popularity with each passing year, but the techniques with which to bring about more efficient surgeries as well as recoveries have evolved to the point the risks associated with vaginal rejuvenation procedures are now very minimal, with patient satisfaction levels higher than ever.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedures

When it comes to vaginal rejuvenation procedures, enhancement of the inner labia (labia minora) is more common than enhancement of the outer labia (labia majora). However, aesthetic enhancement of the labia majora, or “labiaplasty majora”, has been becoming more in demand as of late, as more and more women become comfortable discussing and being honest about physical or cosmetic problems with their genital areas.

Patients desire labiaplasty majora for two basic reasons: to reduce the size of their labia majora or to augment the appearance of their labia majora; the labiaplasty majora is fully capable of both reducing the size and augmenting the appearance of labia majora for patients who desire a combination of the two.

What is an Average Labia Majora?

The purpose of cosmetic surgery is to bring about a physical alteration of a certain body part to achieve a state of a collectively agreed-upon determination of what is “average” for that body part. However, there is no formal, medical standard of determining what the “average” labia majora is; the shape, size, and color of each woman’s vaginal region is unique, with the only measure of “average” being a woman’s personal opinions on what is deemed as an aesthetically-pleasing vaginal area.

However, there are situations in which the shape and size of a woman’s labia majora can cause physical discomfort, embarrassment, or even legitimate medical problems, creating the need for a labiplasty majora procedure that can bring about a more “average”, comfortable size and shape of the labia majora.

Labia Majora Problems

Whatever the cause of the difference in size or shape of labia majora, there are two types of problems that result from these differences: aesthetic problems and physical problems.

Aesthetic problems of the labia majora- labia majora that are too large or too saggy- tend to cause women to feel self-conscious enough to prevent them from enjoying a fully satisfying life.

When labia majora are too large or saggy, they tend to create the appearance of a bulge around their genital region when wearing tight clothing or swim wear, and can cause a woman to feel embarrassed enough around her sexual partner to fully enjoy sex.

Physical problems of the labia majora are considered more serious than aesthetic problems of the labia majora as they can potentially cause legitimate medical issues.

Some women have labia majora that are large or irregular enough that they can cause discomfort, irritation, or pain, on top of the aesthetic problems that can be caused by large or irregularly-shaped labia majora.

Physical problems of the labia majora can include hygiene issues, such as excessive sweating, chronic irritation of the skin on and around the labia, pain during intercourse, and discomfort or pain when wearing tight-fitting pants or undergarments.

Labiaplasty to correct problems with Labia Majora

The technical term for labiaplasty is labia change which could include reduction or changing shape or reconstruction of deformed or missing part. It refers to a cosmetic procedure, which reduces the size or in some cases, changes the shape of the lips on the exterior of the woman’s vagina.

Most women who undergo a labiaplasty majora do so because of the changes to their labia majora as brought on by the effects of aging, pregnancy, and/or weight gain/loss.

As women age, skin all over their bodies begin to lose elasticity, including the skin that makes up their labia majora. As time goes by and skin loses more and more of its elasticity, it will begin to sag, droop, and wrinkle, causing skin to lose its youthful appearance.

Pregnancy and major weight loss after major weight gain tend to exacerbate the natural effects of time on the appearance of skin, especially the skin of the labia majora. As the skin of the labia majora stretches, either from the effects of time, giving birth, or gaining weight, the skin will simply not be able to naturally bounce back to the state it was once before.

However, there are some women who undergo a labiaplasty majora procedure due to genetic or congential labia majora issues. Sometimes, women are naturally born with labia majora that are either too large or very irregularly shaped. Naturally large or irregular labia majora that are caused by genetic or congenital defects or abnormalities typically are usually characterized by the same physical issues as the labia majora of women who issues stem from aging, pregnancy, and/or major weight loss: the loss or absence of sufficiently elastic connective labia majora skin tissue.

Many women have a lot of worries about their vagina and labia, however when they reach out to The Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite they aren’t always certain how to describe the area’s most bothersome to them.

While our experienced, well-trained, compassionate staff is always pleased to help provide you with knowledge and medical expertise; we encourage you to take a few minutes to take a closer look at the inside of your Vagina.

Anatomy of the Inside of the Vagina

Vaginal Corona or Hymen

Just barely inside the vaginal opening, you may see the vaginal corona, or hymen. Your corona may or may not be easily distinguishable from the rest of your vaginal opening, and that isn’t always because of sex. Long ago (and still sometimes today) it was thought that the corona/hymen was “evidence” of whether or not a woman had had sexual intercourse, but that is not the case at all. Not even all people with vulvas are born with intact or easily identifiable vaginal coronas.

During the first few times someone has intercourse or other vaginal entry, pain or bleeding can happen (though it more often does not) due to the wearing away of the corona. There are some whose vaginal coronas simply are so thick, or have such a small opening, that it is indeed painful to have intercourse or enter the vagina otherwise, and sometimes a medical procedure needs to be done to remedy that. All in all, there are many causes for or sources of sexual pain, and the corona is only one of many.

The Infamous G-Spot

If you can put your finger inside your vagina, towards your belly, not your back, you may or may not feel a spongy length of tissue that is a bit like the roof of your mouth in texture (if you have short fingers, you may not be able to). That is the infamous g-spot, or Grafenburg Spot, another potential source of, or contributor to, sexual pleasure or orgasm and is currently understood to be another part of the internal clitoris. The vagina itself, especially past the first, front 1/3rd of it, has hardly any sensory nerve endings at all. The sensations people feel inside the vagina are often more about the external and internal clitoris, including the G-spot, than the vagina itself.

Understand, however, that not all find the g-spot being touched or stimulated to be pleasurable, and it doesn’t lead to orgasm magically in everybody. It isn’t a magic button, it is simply another part of your genital anatomy that is responsive to pleasure. In addition, stimulation of the g-spot may also lead to an orgasm in which some people ejaculate, or release fluid from the urethra. This is not urine, even though it may feel that way. As well, people can ejaculate from orgasm with or without g-spot stimulation.

Cervix and Perinieum

If you poke your finger deeply into your vagina, you may feel something deep inside that feels like a nose or a dimpled chin. This is your cervix, which is the base of the uterus, where, if you were pregnant, a baby would grow. The cervix is the passage through which sperm travel to meet an egg in the fallopian tubes, but don’t worry — nothing but sperm can usually fit in there.

Once you take your fingers out of your vagina, follow the trail of your genitals a bit lower. Right under your vaginal opening is a flat length of skin called the perineum (pair-ee-nay-uhm). Below the perineum is your anus.

Potential Problems within the Inside of your Vagina

If you have a concern about the anatomy of the inside of your Vagina, we encourage you to reach out to our board certified surgeons and experienced medical staff to help address and correct potential problem areas.

At the Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite, you will receive the attentive and superb personal care you deserve when you decide to have plastic surgery of the vaginal area such as vaginaplasty, hymenoplasty or labiaplasty.

Many women have a lot of worries about their labia and the appearance of their vulva, however when they reach out to The Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite they aren’t always certain how to describe the area’s most bothersome to them.

While our experienced, well-trained, compassionate staff is always pleased to help provide you with knowledge and medical expertise; we encourage you to take a few minutes to learn the proper names for the Outside and Inside of the Vagina.

Anatomy of the Outer Vagina

The proper name for the outer genitals is the vulva (vuhl-vah). The vagina is only one part of these organs, and not the whole of them, and many people mistakenly call the vulva the vagina.

The Mons, Labia Majora, and Labia Minora

Where your pubic hair is, below your belly button, is a fatty area of tissue (skin) called the mons (mahns). Your pubic hair will move downward, as will that fatty tissue, around your labia majora (lay-bee-ah) or “outer lips.”

If you pull your outer labia open, you will see your labia minora, or “Inner lips”, which are not covered with hair, and look a bit like flower petals or small tongues. The size, length and color of the inner labia and other parts of the vulva will differ from person to person.

The labia may be long and thick, or barely visible, and may look purple, red, pink, blackish or brown, depending on your own coloring. All of these variations are absolutely normal, as are the labia being two different sizes or shapes. The purpose of your inner labia is pretty important; they have sensory nerve endings which contribute to sexual pleasure and also keep icky bacteria away from what is called the vestibule.

Anatomy of the Interior Vagina

Inner Labia and Clitoris

Looking at the vestibule, between those inner labia from the top down (right below your mons), you’ll first see the top of the inner labia, which create a little skin fold called the clitoral hood. That hood connects to the glans, which is the tip — and only the tip — of the clitoris (klit-or-iss). If you pull up the hood with your fingers, you can get a closer look.

The clitoris — which in full, internal and external, is nearly of the same size as the penis — is usually the most sensitive spot on, and involved in the most sensitive areas of, the vulva. It’s got twice the number of sensory nerve endings the penis does, and it also interacts with over 15,000 nerve endings throughout the whole pelvic area.

The clitoris (sometimes called the “clit” or the “spot”) is the primary source of most genital sensation. In fact, the only organ on the entire body that is solely for sexual arousal, and is attached to ligaments, muscles and veins that become filled with blood during arousal (when you get sexually excited) and contract during orgasm. The clitoris is internal as well as external — and the whole thing is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside — with legs, called crura, that are within the outer labia, as well as the clitoral (or vestibular) bulbs, which surround part of the lower portion of the vaginal canal.

Uretha, Hymen, and Vaginal Walls

Looking lower, you may be able to see another hood-like shape. Right below that shape is a teeny, tiny, barely visible little dot or slit, which is your urethra or urinary opening, where you urinate (or pee) from. Below that is the vaginal opening (sometimes people call it a “slit” or “hole”). You might notice how close the urinary opening is to the vaginal opening. Because of this, sometimes sexual activity can bring bacteria which infect the urinary opening, so it’s important during sexual activity to both empty your bladder before and after, to prevent infection.

Now, if you can slide your finger into your vaginal opening, and squeeze your vaginal walls (engaging what are commonly called PC — pubococcygeus — or Kegel muscles), just like you were trying to hold it in when you have to urinate, or when you’re trying to stop the flow of your urine. You can feel a lot of folds of skin and different textures, and see how the vagina (which is the passage between the vaginal opening and the cervix) can hold your fingers. That is the same way it holds a tampon, or a child during labor.

Potential Problems within the Anatomy of your Vagina

If you have a concern about the anatomy of your Vagina, we encourage you to reach out to our board certified surgeons and experienced medical staff to help address and correct potential problem areas.

Any rape survivor will tell you that the emotional pain itself can be a rather devastating and life changing experience if the proper therapy and help for healing is not found. Often times, no matter how much a victim feels empowered over their attacker by surviving and pushing through the violent memories on a daily basis they are still reminded of the physical impact they had no choice over.

Many rape victims suffer the rupture of their hymen during an attack. A hymen is a thin membrane at the entrance of the vagina and arises from a structure called the hymeneal ring. The hymen has historical and traditional importance as in many cultures throughout the ages and even now it is a symbol of virginity and thus chastity.

Today, there is a simple surgical procedure called Hymenoplasty performed to help restore both self esteem and physical damage caused by rape.

A few things you should know about Hymenoplasty:

The procedure can be done with sedation and local anesthetic.

A piece of the mucosa of the vaginal lining is used to make the hymen.

The mucosa of the vaginal lining acts and looks as the original virginal hymen.

The patient goes home after the procedure with prescriptions for pain and antibiotics.

Pain is minimal and recovery typically takes about two weeks.

As with any Vaginal Surgery Procedure, Hymenoplasty is not for everyone. We encourage you to contact our Vagina and Labia Plastic Surgery Specialists at the Cosmetic Gynecology Suite in New York. It is one of the very few such facilities where the top Board Certified Plastic Surgeons work with the very best Board Certified Gynecologists to provide a combined approach to both simple and complex cosmetic and functional problems of labia, vagina and bladder.

Let us help you erase the physical scars of rape. To schedule a consultation, call The Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite at (212) 772-1300.

Painful intercourse can occur for a variety of reasons — ranging from structural problems to psychological concerns. Many women experience painful intercourse at some point in their lives.

Pain during penetration may be associated with a range of factors, including:

Insufficient lubrication. This is often the result of not enough foreplay. Insufficient lubrication is also commonly caused by a drop in estrogen levels after menopause, after childbirth or during breast-feeding. Also, some medications are known to hinder desire or arousal, which can decrease lubrication and make sex painful. These include antidepressants, high blood pressure medications, sedatives, antihistamines and certain birth control pills.

Injury, trauma or irritation. This includes injury or irritation from an accident, pelvic surgery, female circumcision, episiotomy or a congenital abnormality.

Inflammation, infection or skin disorder. An infection in your genital area or urinary tract can cause painful intercourse. Eczema or other skin problems in your genital area also can be the problem.

Issues with Vaginal Mucosa. Atrophy of the vaginal mucosa is thinning of the skin lining the vagina. It’s one of the changes that comes with decreased estrogen levels.

Vaginismus. Involuntary spasms of the muscles of the vaginal wall (vaginismus) can make attempts at penetration very painful.

Treatment Options for Painful Intercourse

Treatment options will vary for each patient, depending on the underlying cause of the pain. Options typically include medications, therapy, and sometimes surgical procedures in the event a repair is necessary.

Medication to Treat Conditions causing Painful Intercourse

If it is determined that an infection or medical condition is contributing to your pain, treating the underlying cause may resolve your problem. A change in medications known to cause lubrication problems also may eliminate your symptoms.

For most postmenopausal women, dyspareunia or vaginal pain is caused by insufficient lubrication resulting from low estrogen levels. Often, this can be treated with a prescription cream, tablet or flexible ring that releases very small amounts of estrogen directly to your vagina.

Therapy to Reduce Painful Intercourse

Different types of therapy also may be helpful to reduce Painful Intercourse, including:

Desensitization therapy. During this therapy, you learn vaginal relaxation exercises that can decrease pain, including pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises).

Counseling or sex therapy. If sex has been painful for a long time, you may have a negative emotional response tied to sexual stimulation. This can continue, even after treatment. If you have avoided intimacy because of painful intercourse, you may also need help improving communication with your partner to restore sexual intimacy. Talking to a counselor or sex therapist can help resolve these issues.

You and your partner may also be able to minimize pain

Sometimes with just a few changes to your regular routine, you and your partner can work together to help alleviate painful intercourse.

Switch positions. If you experience sharp pain during thrusting, the penis may be striking your cervix or stressing the pelvic floor muscles. Changing positions may help. You can try being on top of your partner during sex. Women usually have more control in this position, so you may be able to regulate penetration to a depth that is less painful.

Communicate. Talk about what feels good and what doesn’t.

Don’t rush. Longer foreplay can help stimulate your natural lubrication. And you may reduce pain by delaying penetration until you feel fully aroused.

Use lubricants. A personal lubricant can make sex more comfortable. Read labels carefully or ask your doctor to recommend a product to try; some personal lubricants that contain glycerin can cause yeast infections.

Surgical options for Reducing Pain during Intercourse

In some instances, women may find that neither medication nor combined therapies are enough to help reduce the pain experienced during intercourse. Often in these circumstances it is discovered that one should undergo Vaginal Reconstruction to improve structure and weakness within the vaginal entrance or canal. This procedure is called Vaginaplasty.

Vaginal Labial Plasty® Surgery, serves many functions: it can improve the appearance of the vaginal introitus, relieve discomfort, aid in proper hygiene, increase sexual satisfaction, and boost self-confidence.

The Cosmetic Gynecology Suite is the only surgical unit of its kind in the world. Here Vaginoplasty, Labiaplasty, hymen reconstruction or modification and total functional vaginal and pelvic reconstruction can be done in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures.

You don’t have to suffer from painful intercourse. There are a number of procedures that can be done on the vagina depending on what the patients problems are. Contact our Vagina and Labia Plastic Surgery Specialists to provide you with the knowledge and medical expertise you need to make the correct decisions.

Vaginal Labial Plasty® Surgery, serves many functions: it can improve the appearance of the vaginal introitus, relieve discomfort, aid in proper hygiene, increase sexual satisfaction, and boost self-confidence. Many of our patients who have received care at our Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite on Park Avenue have found great success within a 3 way approach to fix their Vaginal Problems.

The 3 techniques combined most often to achieve optimal results include:

Tightening your Vagina with Vaginaplasty

Cosmetic Improvement through Vaginal rejuvenation Surgery

Fixing Stress Incontinence

Tighten your Vagina with Vaginal Labial Plasty®

The VLP® procedure may be performed to correct internal or external problems. Internal vaginaplasty tightens muscles in the vagina that have loosened from aging or childbirth, while external vaginaplasty trims the vaginal lips (labia minora) to remove excess skin and achieve a balance in size.

During a simple vaginaplasty, the vagina is tightened as the surgeon takes away excess stretched tissue and tightens the tissues and muscles surrounding the vagina. The procedure itself is fairly straightforward and fast. Typically, it will take one or two hours, and afterward, the patient spends about an hour in a recovery room, usually supervised by a registered nurse.

Cosmetic Improvement with Vaginal rejuvenation Surgery

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery restores the vagina to its youthful appearance and performance by tightening and strengthening the vagina and pelvic floor, as well as making any desired cosmetic adjustments.

Fixing Stress Incontinence

Urinary stress incontinence, with involuntary loss of urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, changing body positions, or sometimes during orgasm, may occur in all ages of women, but more commonly in women with a history of vaginal deliveries. In these women, often as a result of childbirth injuries, the normal supports of the bladder and the urethra, the tube leading from the bladder to the outside, often loses some of its support. There is a variety of techniques available to help with Urinary stress incontinence, including Vaginal Labial Plasty® Surgery.

What you should know about Vaginal Labiaplasty Surgery

There are a few risks associated with vaginaplasty, as there are with any surgery. Most commonly, these risks include infection, bleeding or scarring. However, when done by experts these are quite rare. The doctor should control bleeding at the time of the operation, and following the procedure, antibiotics are given which prevent infection.

At the Cosmetic Gynecology Surgery Suite, you will receive the attentive and superb personal care you deserve when you decide to have plastic surgery of the vaginal area such as vaginaplasty, hymenoplasty or labiaplasty. It is one of the very few such facilities where the top Board Certified Plastic Surgeons work with the very best Board Certified Gynecologists to provide a combined approach to the complex cosmetic and functional problems of labia, vagina and bladder.

Vaginal fullness may be caused by pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition in which organs may begin to prolapse, or fall, out of their normal positions. Without medical treatment or surgery, these organs may prolapse farther into the vagina or even through the vaginal opening if their supports weaken enough.

Organs affected by pelvic organ prolapse include:

The Uterus

Rectum

Bladder or Urethra

Small bowel

The vagina itself

Types of Pelvic Organ Prolapse:

Rectocele (prolapse of the rectum) – This involves a falling of the back wall of the vagina When this wall weakens; the rectal wall pushes against the vaginal wall, creating a bulge. This bulge may become especially noticeable during bowel movements.

Cystocele (prolapse of the bladder, bladder drop) – This can occur when the front wall of the vagina falls. As a result, the bladder may fall into the vagina. When this condition occurs, the urethra usually falls as well. When both the bladder and urethra fall, this condition is known as a cystourethrocele. Urinary stress incontinence (urine leakage during coughing, sneezing, or exercise) is a common symptom of this condition.

Enterocele (herniated small bowel) — The weakening of the upper vaginal supports can cause this type of prolapse. This condition primarily occurs following a hysterectomy, and results when the front and back walls of the vagina separate, allowing the intestines to push against the vaginal skin. This condition often causes a Vaginal vault prolapse.

Prolapsed uterus (womb) — This involves a weakening of a group of ligaments called the uterosacral ligaments at the top of the vagina. This causes the uterus to fall, which commonly causes both the front and back walls of the vagina to weaken as well. There are four stages of uterine prolapse:

First-degree prolapse: The uterus droops into the upper portion of the vagina.

Second-degree prolapse: The uterus falls into the lower part of the vagina.

Third-degree prolapse: The cervix sags to the vaginal opening and may protrude outside the body. This condition is also called procidentia, or complete prolapse.

Fourth-degree prolapse: The entire uterus protrudes entirely outside the vagina. This condition is also called procidentia, or complete prolapse.

Vaginal vault prolapse – This type of prolapse may occur following a hysterectomy. Because the uterus provides support for the top of the vagina, this condition is common after a hysterectomy, with upwards of 10% of women developing some degree of vaginal vault prolapse after enduring one. In vaginal vault prolapse, the top of the vagina falls toward the vaginal opening. This may cause the walls of the vagina to weaken as well. As this condition progresses the top of the vagina may protrude out of the body through the vaginal opening, effectively turning the vagina inside out.

Risk Factors of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Risk factors of pelvic organ prolapse include the following:

Pregnancy

Menopause

Hysterectomy

Advanced age

Obesity

Dysfunction of the nerves and tissues

Abnormalities of the connective tissue

Strenuous physical activity

Prior pelvic surgery

What you should know about Pelvic Organ Prolapse Symptoms

Approximately 30%-40% of women develop some form of pelvic organ prolapse in their lifetime. This is usually following menopause, childbirth, or a hysterectomy.

Most women who develop this condition are older than 40 years.

Many women who develop symptoms of a prolapse do not seek medical help because of embarrassment or other reasons.

Some women who develop a prolapse do not experience symptoms.

Any woman who experiences symptoms that may indicate a prolapse should contact her doctor. A prolapse is rarely a life-threatening condition. However, prolapses do gradually worsen. As a result, timely medical care is recommended to evaluate for and to prevent problematic symptoms and complications caused by weakening tissue and muscle in the vagina.
